ERNEST DOWLER OAM
It is our sad duty to advise of the passing of Pipe Major Ernest Dowler OAM on
the evening of Friday 22nd July 2011. Pipe Major of both the Royal
Caledonian Society Pipe Band and The Adelaide University Regiment,
tutor for many years at Scotch College - Adelaide and also a tutor
at The City of Adelaide Pipe Band. In 2009 Ern was awarded the
Order of Australia Medal for his services to Piping, an award many
thought was long overdue.
Ern had a huge influence on piping in South Australia and his enthusiasm, drive
and encouragement will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his
family at this time.
Many a humorous story will be remembered, but most of all Ern was a true Highland
Gentleman. |

VALE LEWIS TURRELL M.B.E.
We have been informed of the passing of Lewis Turrell in Auckland, New Zealand on the 21st April 2011 after a long battle with lung cancer. A sad loss for piping in this part of the world. Lewis was a much loved character and friend to all he met. A pupil of William Kennedy, George McLennan and PM Donald McLeod M.B.E. Lewis rose to legendary status in 1958 when he won the Gold Medal at Inverness (the first overseas competitor to do so). On that day he also won the Strathspeys and Reels, the Jig and was second in the March. He has been Pipe Major of the Invercargill and Wellington Pipe Bands and has made such a huge impact on piping in New Zealand. Lewis will be sadly missed by all. |

VALE ALEC KERR
It is with sadness that we report the passing of Alec
Kerr. Alec was a piper with the Black Watch and NCR Pipe Band in Scotland
before emigrating to South Australia and joining the McDouall-Stuart
Memorial Pipe Band. His funeral was held
on Tuesday 18/8/09. He will be fondly remembered as one of the true gentleman
of Piping.
ERNEST DOWLER
Pipe Major Ernest Dowler, formerly of the Adelaide University
Regiment Pipes and Drums has been awarded the Order of Australia Medal
at the Queens Birthday Honours for Services to the Pipe Band community. We
done Ern, a great ambassador for piping and many of us owe you a great
debt of gratitude. It is great to see Ernie still competing in Open competition
well into his eighties. |
